Patty Hume – A Short Intro
Hello, and thanks for reading our blog! I’m Patty Hume, an artist and designer living in Joshua Tree, California. My husband Jonathan and I love our desert lifestyle and sharing it with visitors at our popular vacation rentals in the Hi-desert, Spirit Wind and Beavertail.
I write a lot about interiors, California desert living inspiration, travel, art, renovation projects, desert plants and the Hi-desert!
Spirit Wind – Joshua Tree
Spirit Wind is located on 5 acres of semi-rural desert land in Joshua Tree, California, at the south end of the village. Our main house, Spirit Wind is an architecturally significant, one-of-a-kind post-modern structure designed and built by the architect George Zelenz, between 2001-2009.
We have sweeping 360 views into the park, Section 6, the mountains and village below. There are 200+ Joshua trees on our property as well as other desert trees and native cactus. We have lots of wildlife on the property. We love watching the bunnies, coyotes, lizards, snakes, quail, etc.
We bought Spirit Wind in February 2016, after hunting for a desert home for a year. We felt drawn to the desert and to this place. We feel so fortunate to the the stewards of this house and to get to spend time in this magical landscape.
The main house is 2 bedroom/ 2.5 baths and sleeps 10 people. We also have a smaller guest house, Beavertail on the property.

BOOK ON AIRBNBBeavertail – Joshua Tree
Beavertail is the guest house of Spirit Wind and they share a large 5 acre property. Our guest house has been in a number of international design magazines and books including California Lifestyle magazine. The mural was designed by local artist Xihomara Alvarez.
Beavertail has a bit of a reputation for being a love nest and we are happy to say we have had a number of couples get engaged at Beavertail.
Beavertail sleeps 2-4 people and has it’s own hot tub and patio.

BOOK ON AIRBNBEl Bandito – 29 Palms / Desert Heights
(Coming soon… summer 2020)
In 2019 we decided to take on a new desert project in Desert Heights, a rural area on the border between north Joshua Tree and North 29 Palms. This compound is 17.5 acres with two large midcentury houses and a homesteader cabin. It is adjacent to 85 acres of BLM land, so it is very quiet and peaceful. It is currently under renovation and we plan to make one of the houses available on Airbnb later this year.
This is a sneak peek at pool we built at El Bandito. We named her Zanzibar. We are still working on the landscape and will be posting more updates this spring.
