Gochujang Jackfruit Tacos at Spirit Wind Joshua Tree | The Devil Wear’s Parsley

Photo: Natalie Wiser-Orozco

Natalie Wiser-Orozco from the food blog The Devil Wear’s Parsley was out at Spirit Wind last month shooting her new cooking video. She teaches us how to make Gochujang Jackfruit Tacos (vegan) which were A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. We feasted on them after the photoshoot. For those of you not familiar with it, gochujang is a sweet red chili paste that is popular in Korean cooking.

Check out the Natalie’s Spirit Wind blog post & cooking video.

Our Weather Station is LIVE at Spirit Wind Joshua Tree | Upper Friendly Hills

It’s always hard to figure out what to get Jonathan. Last XMAS I bought him a weather station for Spirit Wind, because we are always wondering about the wind speeds and how much rain we get out here in our corner of Joshua Tree. They don’t call it Spirit Wind for nothing… it gets really windy out here in the winter.

But you know how things are, we were busy and Jonathan stuck the weather station box in our shipping container and half forgot about it. Finally, this weekend (9 months later) we got the post installed and Jonathan mounted it and got it up and running.

The nearest weather stations are 2 or more miles away so we thought it would be helpful to the whole neighborhood to have a weather station in Upper Friendly Hills. With the topography, it is very common for the weather to be different in different parts of Joshua Tree. For example, yesterday it rained and we got .04 inches, but other parts of JT (like Panorama Heights) got over 2″.

The Spirit Wind weather station data is posted to Weather Underground. You can check it out here:

Exploring the Moorten Botanical Garden – Palm Springs

I had heard about the Moorten Botanical Garden for years, but it wasn’t until our last trip out to Palm Springs in October that we found it when we were doing an architectural driving tour with my grandparents. It is only a few blocks west of the Ace Hotel and Pool Club, where we have been hanging out for years.

Started in 1938, many of the 3000 desert plant varieties are large and mature. I think of the Moorten as kind of a scrappy desert cousin to the Huntington rare cactus and succulent garden in Pasadena.

There is a $4 donation requested for entry. They have a nursery when you can buy small cacti and succulents. And they rent out the garden for special events like weddings.

It is staffed by a group of plant loving senior volunteers. I laughingly told Jonathan that I was seeing my future. I predict we retire to Palm Springs someday and that I spend my golden years volunteering at the botanical garden.

Next time you in Palm Springs, save an hour or two to visit the Moorten. And bring home a little cacti to remember your visit!

Hello Hot Tub Time Machine! | Spirit Wind Joshua Tree

So, we finally got a hot tub for Spirit Wind! I’m super excited about it. It’s such a nice place to chill. It is a salt water tub that seats 6.

This is the temporary location of the hot tub, right off the main patio. We are eventually going to build a separate patio for the hot tub. In the meanwhile, the great thing about this location is the incredible 180 degree desert view. You can literally see for miles and miles… you can count endless Joshua trees,  you can see the mountains across the valley, the fake Afghani village on the military base, into Section 6 and the National Park. It’s a killer view.

AND… you can watch both the sunrise AND sunset from the hot tub. Sunrise hot tubbing is really magical. It’s really breathtaking to watch the earth wake up. Tip: Get up an hour earlier then the official sunrise time. You want to see the first light over the mountains which is probably about 45 minutes earlier. I think that first light is even more stunning than the actual sun rising above the crest of the mountains. Watch them both.

Hammock Circle of Love – Spirit Wind Joshua Tree

I’m very excited. I want to introduce you to my new favorite spot in the world.

Screen Shot 2016-07-30 at 7.55.28 AM

If you haven’t guessed already, it’s the hammock circle at Spirit Wind. I’m been Instagramming about it since we finished building it on the 4th of July. Jonathan and I designed it. It’s basically the center of the universe.

As one of our guests said, “It’s supreme!”. We built it for star gazing. But it’s great during the day, too. The wind gently rocks you while you soak in the panoramic view of the house, mountains, boulders and Joshua trees.

At night you feel body less and like you are floating through space. It’s the perfect spot for watching meteor showers. It’s just completely magical. Photo: @niritgur

You can also get a great view of the architecture. The facade of building based on ratios in atonal ancient musical scales. Photo: @nextleveljay

All your stress and problems just blow away. Bunnies hop by. Birds soar. It’s the perfect spot for deep life altering conversations and pondering the universe. Watching the sunset.
